What should I do if someone with dementia wanders?
Guidance for families concerned about wandering, leaving home unexpectedly, or becoming lost.
Wandering can be linked to restlessness, habit, searching for something familiar, or simply wanting to walk.
If you are concerned, speak with a health professional and consider practical supports such as identification, familiar walking routes, door alerts and community awareness.
Regular meaningful activity, outdoor time and predictable routines can reduce the urge to leave without purpose.
If someone is missing, contact emergency services immediately. WellKind does not replace emergency medical or police services.
